Patient Story – Erik

Erik and his mother at Obras Hospital

Meet Erik

At just seven years old, Erik has faced more challenges than most. Born with a congenital birth defect affecting his hand and shoulder, he was unable to use his right hand—he couldn’t grasp, close his fingers, or perform even the simplest of tasks.

Eating, dressing, and playing like other children his age were daily struggles. But beyond the physical limitations, Erik’s condition weighed heavily on his mother’s heart.
For years, she watched her son navigate life with one functional hand, unsure if he would ever receive the care he needed. The emotional burden of uncertainty was immense. Yet, she never lost hope.

That hope led Erik and his mother on a 4.5-hour journey to Antigua, where they met the 842 Gill/Stehly Surgery Team. During their visit, Erik was selected for a life-changing procedure: a right tendon transfer from his wrist to his hand. Thanks to this surgery, Erik now has full function of his right hand for the first time in his life.

For over 30 years, Faith In Practice has treated patients like Erik, successfully managing some of the most complex cases in Guatemala.
It is because of supporters like you that we’ve been able to extend our reach and offer hope and healing to families across the country.
