A friend once told me that he always feels God’s presence when birds are singing. God was definitely present to the Johnson Village team early this morning with a chorus of birds welcoming us to the morning in Antigua. We followed that with a devotional led by Pastor Andy on how Jesus invites all of us to follow his example of openness, love and service. In John 13, Jesus said after washing the disciples’ feet “For I have set you an example, that you should also do as I have done to you. Very truly I tell you, servants are not great than their master, nor are messengers greater than one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.” It was a fabulous way to start the day.
We then packed and boarded our buses for a beautiful trip from Antigua to Totonicapán going from 5,000 feet of elevation to almost 10,000 feet. We saw the beautiful countryside of Guatemala AND received a history lesson of Guatemala and Central America up through 1940 from Dr. Johnson. We arrived at the school in San Francisco El Alto Village which will be the location for our first two days of service. We toured the site and were greeted by many local volunteers. We then spent the next few hours working with the them transforming the school into a clinic with a pharmacy, rooms for specialist medical teams, and a room where wheelchairs will be built and fitted to provide mobility for those in need.
We are ready for Monday. We are ready to serve.
