One thing you will notice when you arrive in Guatemala is the warmth of the people. If you smile and look them in the eye, they will return your greeting with an ear-to-ear grin.
However, for many Guatemalan people, this smile is a cause of shame. WIth no access to dental care, they have learned to smile close-mouthed to cover their decaying teeth. Take, for instance, 16 year-old Yakelin. Yakelin arrived at the dental clinic on Monday with several of her front teeth almost missing. Her hopes were likely to save her teeth from decaying further with the knowledge that she may have to have her teeth pulled to save her from infection.
What she did not realize is the extent of the work that could be done to save her teeth. With the expertise of Dr. David and Nurse Kathie, they were able to do an extensive restoration that resulted in a smile that Yakelin will be proud of for years to come.
Hopefully, some day soon, she will learn to smile an ear-to-ear grin that displays her beautiful teeth. Until then, we enjoy her closed smile of gratitude.
