Today was relatively smooth sailing in the operating room. Everyone is now well-oriented, especially knowing where the bathrooms are. Our Surgeries went well. How quickly we have transitioned into a routine operation. It is almost boring. Well, almost.
Near the end of the day, there was a prolonged thunderstorm with heavy rain and thunder. We lost power for about 20 minutes. Fortunately, this did not cause any adverse outcomes regarding the patients undergoing surgery. There was only one patient who was under general anesthesia at the time of the power outage. The surgical team caring for that patient never missed a beat. The patient was switched from ventilator breathing to manual breathing. The case was completed uneventfully. Our other patients were under local or spinal anesthesia and breathing on their own so they were never in any danger. It was a pleasure to watch medical professionals at work, and how they accommodated themselves to the challenge. Everyone remained cool and calm. No problemo.
Although today was Tuesday, it was hump day for us. We have completed two days of surgery and have two days of surgery cases left. We will not operate on Friday since we will be leaving very early on Saturday morning. On Friday we will make rounds and discharge most of our patients and consult with the hospital physicians who will care for any patients who are not ready for discharge on that day. Only an emergency surgery would be done on Friday.
Until tomorrow,
The Mesen Team
