“We plan, God laughs” – Yiddish Proverb

If Monday was a dream Tuesday started a little rougher and got worse.  We woke to the news that several of our team members were not feeling well.  Our team doctor was kept busy handing out meds and seeing “patients”.  We went on with our day and began to set up for the first surgeries.  By the end of the day we had started IVs on four team members and sent several back to the hotel.  The healthier among us soldiered on.

We knew we were in trouble when one of the surgeons lost consciousness during a surgery.  He felt unwell, pronounced that he needed to sit down and promptly fainted.  Calls of “Doctor down! Doctor down!” echoed in the hallways.  Fortunately, another doctor had just entered the room and was standing in the right position to catch the fallen.  Very quickly another surgeon stepped in to finish the case and we transported the sick man to PACU for treatment. Two bags of IV fluid later he felt better and was transported back to the hotel with a few others who were unwell.

This scenario caused a ripple effect in our little team.  Patient surgeries were cancelled.  Other support staff in that room were reassigned. The doctor’s family remained at the hospital to finish their work while trying to suppress their worry about him.  The event of sickness among us required flexibility and trust that God was in control.  The day finally came to an end with a few more reporting sickness and the rest of us holding our breath. We plan, God laughs but it still all works together for good.
