FLEXIBILITY is the word of the week.
How this rings true.
We begin our week in Antigua with a Blessing of the Hands ceremony prior to heading to Las Obras for Triage Day. It is a moment of reflection as we think about the work ahead of all of us. Our spiritual leader, John, will bless wooden crosses that we will either choose to wear or hand out to our patients. It is a welcome reminder of the importance of faith to the Guatemalan people we will serve.
As soon as our Team Meeting and Blessing of the Hands are finished, we walk through the cobblestone streets to Las Obras to begin Triage Day. During this day every patient will meet with multiple physicians and nurses to determine what treatment and care will be needed over the course of this next week. Eighty patients will stream through the exam rooms in one day. Eighty patients and their families will wait patiently for their turn. We are so grateful that none of our patients were turned away due to underlining medical conditions or COVID-19. We are equally grateful for the Faith In Practice staff members who, due to the scarcity of interpreters, graciously stepped in to help communicate with our patients. Flexibility, indeed!
Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers as we head into a week of medical service!
