Today was the day all the planning and preparation got real. The hospital was abuzz with patients and staff working together on getting intake materials done, initial screening completed, scheduling admission appointments and providing patient education ahead of surgeries starting tomorrow. We screened 61 patients today.
We were enthusiastically greeted by hospital staff and local Faith in Practice team members. The hospital administrator gave introductions and offered a welcoming prayer. The day wrapped up with getting to the hotel and SLEEP.
Today was also an organization and planning day for the 50 plus surgeries planned for the coming week. Lots to do with stocking the pharmacy, getting medical equipment & supplies in place, planning patient intakes and the like. Staff in each of their respective clinical disciplines worked together through the prep & their processes were sewn together with the whole team communication meeting later in the day.
The newest member of the Bullard Surgical team mission is 32 year old Madeline L. She’s travelled the farthest on the team, coming from her home in Chicago. This is Madeline’s first Faith in Practice mission. She was scheduled last year for the Antigua mission that was cancelled due to the pandemic. Madeline is a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist). Madeline was raised in Chicago, one of 5 kids in her family. Her family valued community volunteer service as she was growing up. Madeline’s experience during the pandemic deepened her commitment to others. It also illuminated for her the huge health disparities many people suffer from that are often not recognized. This for her has renewed her passion for helping people who are vulnerable and in need.
