A big hello from Team Robinson! Day one of surgery is down and everyone around here is pretty exhausted.
Wendy did as Wendy does this morning and held breakfast at 6 am sharp. Everyone emerged from the beautiful casitas looking bright and ready for a big day. After a delicious spread of something that looked a lot like nachos, we made our way to Las Obras for what would be a long and productive day.
All five operating rooms were bustling throughout the day. The members of these new surgical teams had to learn to work together. For some, such as Jacob and Leslie (who have operated together for years) or Don and Lisa (the Yarbrough family) this was quick and easy. Others had to learn each other’s processes as they jumped into action throughout the day. From gallbladder removals to hysterectomies, the day was full for everyone.
Later in the afternoon, a few of us on the team were able to visit “La Casa De Fe,” which is basically the Ronald McDonald House for Faith in Practice. La Casa De Fe helped me understand just how much Faith in Practice does for those it serves. Patients and their families are invited to stay in La Casa De Fe before and after their surgeries for a total of 10 days. The beautiful place can house around 80 people, Faith in Practice staff feed them three meals a day and care for every need. While we were there, we saw all of the women gather in one of the front rooms, where the staff was putting on a Mother’s Day celebration.
It was truly moving to see La Casa De Fe and the good people that run it. Without these wonderful volunteers, none of this would be possible.
