Greetings from Antigua, Guatemala.
This is John White, the team blogger and photographer for Team Hope in Motion! Thanks for reading along as I share some news and highlights from our week-long trip, plus some photographs of the team in action.
Today was a travel day and the team of approximately 50 health care providers from all over the US made their way from their homes to Antigua, Guatemala, to a wonderful place called Quinta de las Flores which we will call home for the next week. A warm welcome and orientation session was provided by Faith in Practice to communicate the basic guidelines and format of the mission during the week. Yvonne from Faith in Practice also gave some tips for safety in Antigua, and highlighted the local group of Faith in Practice staff in the hospital, warehouse and Casa de Fey where patients stay before and after their surgical procedure.
We have a very nice mix of Orthopedic Surgeons who specialize in hip, knee and foot and ankle surgery, as well as anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, physical therapists, nurses and logistics folks. This year we have 5 operating rooms and the goal is to perform 70 procedures during the four operative days.
We had a nice group dinner and are excited to spend the day tomorrow looking more carefully at the patients and performing pre-op work ups, organizing the week of surgeries, and organizing the equipment need to do the procedures. Over the next few days, I will be featuring various stories and remarks from team members and patients that we meet. Right now, many of us are getting to know each other for the first time.
Stay tuned for more, and thanks for your support.
John
