Team Thompson has assembled and arrived in Puerto Barrios, Izabal, Guatemala. This is a new community for Faith in Practice, and our team is excited to be the first team to serve the people in this eastern department, sandwiched between Belize, Honduras, and the rest of Guatemala. It is also home to the Garifuna people, who are descendants of Carib, Arawak, and West African people.
Our team, led by Felicity Thompson and Richard Rosenthal, consists of 25 volunteers from the United States and Canada, dozens of community volunteers, and Guatemalan Faith in Practice staff.
Our first day, Sunday, started with a six-hour bus journey from Guatemala City to our clinic site in Puerto Barrios, a quick lunch on-site, a few hours to set-up the various clinic spaces, and a training session aimed to prepare us for the week ahead. Team Thompson boasts mostly returning volunteers, with enough new volunteers to infuse us with energy and enthusiasm.
Tomorrow is our first clinic day. More blog posts will be coming with stories from our Mobility Clinic, General Medicine, Gynecology, and Ultrasound.
