After cars, planes, planes, and vans, 44 Team Wells volunteers (doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists, nurses, interpreters, administrators) arrived in Antigua–a city brimming in charm with a complex history. Day one started with a tour of Casa De Fe where patients and their families can stay pre and post medical treatment. The Casa fills a huge need for Guatemalans who travel to Antigua for medical care. Felipe gave an orientation, telling us more that 50% of the population lives below the poverty level, medical care is virtually unavailable in rural Guatemala, and Faith In Practice provides much needed care and compassion. Then volunteers enjoyed a city tour, a hike at the volcano, a wander through the garden at the hotel, a delicious meal and a walk through the beautiful city. Early tomorrow morning we bus to Totonicapán where we’ll set up the site to see people at a school or community center. We expect to serve over 500 adults and kids on Monday.
