We started the day with an amazing breakfast provided by our cooks. Devotions was shortly started after. Today’s devotions was based around being “thankful”.There are way to many thing to be thankful for that you cannot possibly count them all. If you want to know where to start just take a look at your surroundings. Being thankful should never just be about what is provided for you, but it should also be about giving other people reasons to be thankful. An example would be how the Guatemalan people are very thankful for us to come down to Guatemala and help them and their loved ones. After devotions we then went to the Obras to start our first day of surgeries. I based the title of today’s blog on the return of Faith In Practice, because it is our first day for the team since last year. We had a total of 21 cases today that varied from gallbladders, breast mass, a dermoid the size of a new born baby etc. The day was a total success, we learned how to work with each other and how to communicate with one another, and a bonus was that the cases were done efficiently and in a timely manner. There was one surgery that really peaked my interest, it was the dermoid involved case.

The case that involved the dermoid was very interesting. As you may or may not know dermoids have the possibility to grow hair, teeth, bones, cartilage, fat, nail and possibly eyes. Unfortunately we did not get any eyes but there was hair, a tooth, fat, bones, and cartilage. The dermoid that the surgeon were operating on was about the size of a new born baby, which made the patient look pregnant. As shown in the picture above. What really intrigued me was how the dermoid came to be and how is it possible that it grew that large. It was a challenging case but not to challenging for our amazing team. At the end of the day when all the surgeries where finished the team gathered at the hotel dinning area to be surprised at the amazing food the cooks provided again. Today was a fabulous day and tomorrow will be the same.
