Day 3…. Following our chosen path.

We begin this morning with a devotional led by Magdy. He tells us of Father Damien and how he cared for those with leprosy in Moloka’i. A path was laid before Father Damien, and he followed it. He followed it without doubt, without wavering, and without fear. This path ultimately led to his own diagnosis of leprosy. But this path also led him to care for many discarded. This path led to the building of hospitals and churches, and homes. This path improved the quality of life of many people with leprosy.

We are all here in Guatemala, following the path laid before us. Unlike Father Damien, we may initially have had doubts or fears. But we are here. And even though we will not build homes, hospitals, or churches, we will improve the quality of life for our patients. We will follow our chosen paths. We will care for them without fear or doubt. And we will never waver in our mission here.

Our patients today are no different. One patient, Junior, is a 12-year-old boy with cerebral palsy that also suffered from contracture. This boy’s path led him into the OR at Obras and Dr. Robinson’s care. I am sure Junior had his doubts and his fears about surgery. But he was there. He followed his path. We pray that his recovery path is easy and swift.

We are looking forward to seeing how our path leads us to tomorrow.
