Greetings from Guatemala!
Carmelina’s story
Carmelina finally arrived after a long journey. She lives four hours away and felt like she would never make it. She lives alone and has only one son. For days, she wouldn’t get out of bed or eat. It was her daughter-in-law who first told her about FIP and helped her get in touch with Antonio from the clinic
With her daughter-in-law’s support, she made it to the clinic, where she noticed the “gringos” and commented on how handsome they were. Although she actually needs two knee replacements, she was only able to get one for now. Antonio has been by her side, taking her to every appointment, and she is incredibly grateful for his help. His uncle is also here, assisting her with everything she needs.
Now, as a patient, Carmelina expresses deep gratitude. She remembers how unwell she felt upon arrival but is thankful for the care and support she has received.
Bryner’s story
Bryner is a patient from Cuyotenango, living three hours away. His uncle is here with him for support. He first learned about the clinic from a friend who had undergone surgery for FIP, so he decided to visit since it was nearby.
Three years ago, Bryner was in a motorcycle accident that required surgery. However, six months later, while still using crutches, he fell again, causing his leg to bend in the opposite direction and the metal plate in his leg to bend as well. When he was taken to the hospital, doctors said he would need another surgery, but his mother declined due to the high cost. As a result, he spent two years with a bent leg, relying on crutches to move around.
Despite his condition, Bryner continued to work with his family, who make uniforms for police officers. He was able to drive but could never stand on his own. In October, he visited the clinic, hoping for a solution. Then, in January, he received the call he had been waiting for doctors would be available for his surgery in February.
Although his mother left a year ago, Bryner remains strong and determined, now living with his father. With this new opportunity of finally having surgery, he looks forward to finally regaining his mobility and moving towards a better future.
